Janis Martin has been pulled from the Americana Festival on Doctors orders, Janis suffering with severe headaches and breathing problems is currently waiting on test results hopefully ruling out a suspected brain aneurism. The worlds most loved female rockabilly is resting while she waits for the results mid to late June. We will give you more news as we receive it.

Our thoughts are with you Janis and we wish you a speedy and full recovery.

Janis's latest recording produced by Rosie Flores will be released as planned, Rosie says Janis has never been in better voice the 10 track rockin' and bluesy CD includes songs from the Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline songbooks.
Janis will be replaced at the Americana by Ray Campi and Kevin Fennell on lead guitar one of the original Rockabilly Rebels, Ray will be playing his customised trademark jewelled upright bass sporting the confederate flag on the back the pair will be backed by the Hemsby House Band and the set will comprise of all the rockabilly hits plus some rockin' country.

The Rat Pack are laying down plans to record a new album of original material at Shack Studios the first since their Rockin’ For Independence album. Planned for release before christmas the album will be recorded in September and songs taken from it will enter their set in the meantime. The decision to make an original album was taken from requests by their audience it appears that the most requested tracks are the ones that the band wrote themselves including the incredibly popular Rockin’ Express. The album will still follow the lines of a good old Rat Pack gig including jivers, strollers, boppers and a ballad.

A tribute from Sandy Ford.

The Rock’n’Roll circuit has lost one of its most highly respected Teds. Alan Flockhart, fondly known as Al, has sadly passed away. Al was one of the few remaining original Teds from the fifties. He was a successful businessman who had his own HGV driving school and yard where The Flying Saucers used to record and rehearse.

Everybody remembers him for his generosity, especially when it came to buying everyone in the pub a drink at every gig. It was Al who provided the Flying Saucers a coach for their fan club to go to the Saucers gigs from The Burnell Arms, East ham, and at another time a red double decker bus like the one in the film ‘Summer Holiday’. Talking about films, Al can be seen as the singer of The High-Tones in the film Buddys Song so he will be remembered forever on the silver screen as a latter day Gene Vincent
look alike. However friends will remember him more for his harmonica playing.

A happy go lucky generous Scot, Al will be sadly missed by his friends and family.

Travis LeDoyt, touted as the "world's best young Elvis" will not be returning to the UK's Americana Festival in 2007 but will be returning to the UK in the near future according to Ledoyt's manager, Dick McVey.
n a statement released by McVey, he states, "There is a lot of false and untrue information being circulated about Travis LeDoyt and me and Travis's failure to return to the UK for this year's Americana Festival and I feel obligated to our fans and interested parties there to set the record straight. I want to assure everyone there that the reasons for us not returning to the Americana are simple and have nothing to do with money or greed on our part. The primary reason we are not returning to the Americana stems from the return of the Americana contract from the promoter to us with items stricken from the contract that are essential to us providing the fans with our best show. On our last tour in October 2006 with this same promoter, there were several broken promises and contractual oversights on his part and we didn't want to return to the Americana without protecting ourselves from these kinds of things happening again. I want to assure the fans that Travis and the band loved performing in the UK and Travis is very appreciative of the outpouring of love and support he received there. He will return to the UK."

LeDoyt is working on several dates in the UK for the future. McVey adds that he doesn't want the fans in the UK to think LeDoyt will not be returning to the UK, and adds they are looking at several options and offers to return to the UK in the near future. McVey advises fans to watch LeDoyt's website at www.travisledoyt.com for future dates in the UK.

Billy Lee Riley appears to have fallen upon hard times after an accident that hurt his hip and a law suit that cost him dearly. Bobby Crafford drummer in The Pacers performed with Sonny Burgess and Riley in his old hometown just before christmas and had this to say ofhis old mucker.

Riley is doing better he had a hip replaced and then fell and hurt it but is doing ok and playing shows Benefit gigs will be held acrss the Uk and the USA from now until the summer to help pay for the Rockabilly legends hospital bills. Watch this space for detailsof a show near you.

Letter to the Rat from Billy Lee Riley

On September 2004 I fell in Target store in Little Rock Arkansas and broke my hip. I had complete hip replacement in November 2004. I thought it was doing alright and I worked several shows in that year. Then around April the pain came back to my leg, hip & knee which was also torn and had to be repaired. Finely I went back to my Dr and he did an Xray and an MRI and found out that it had all came apart which meant that I would have to have another Complete hip replacement. So in December I had another complete hip replacement. There has been some nerve damage which my DR said would always be there and sooner or later another hip replacement is possible. I sued Target and waited two years to get into court working very very little because of the pain. Well we finely went to court in January and lost everything. I am now stuck and facing Dr's with bills that I will never be able to pay and my work has all but stopped. I am still gonna try to work as much as I can which will be very little because it is very hard just to stand on my feet. I have two shows booked for this year one is close to home ,in Memphis and the other is in London for the guy that is putting on the benefit thete with the understandings that if I can't make it there will be no problem. He uhas known for a long time that I have been in this fix. So I thought that maybe you could condense it down and be fair to my fans and let them know where their money is going. Adding it to the poster someway.
Your Friend

Billy Lee Riley

Pookie Hudson, 72, Singer and Songwriter for the Spaniels, Dies

Pookie Hudson, lead singer and songwriter for the doo-wop group the Spaniels, who lent his romantic tenor to hits like “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight” and influenced generations of later artists, died on Tuesday at his home in Capitol Heights, Md. He was 72.Pookie Hudson Family, via Associated Press Pookie Hudson, standing second from left, with other members of the Spaniels, a group that formed in 1952 and existed in various formations. The cause was complications of cancer of the thymus, his publicist, Bill Carpenter, said.Mr. Hudson continued performing into last fall, when he learned that his cancer had returned after a remission. His last recordings were done in October for a CD scheduled for release this fall, Mr. Carpenter said.Mr. Hudson’s longtime manager, Wellington Robinson, said he wrote “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight” (also known as “Goodnight, Well It’s Time to Go”) for a young woman he was dating at the time. That signature Spaniels song was a Top 5 R&B hit in 1954. The McGuire Sisters rushed out a version that sold even more copies. At the time, only black radio stations would play Mr. Hudson’s version, Mr. Carpenter said. (The McGuire Sisters are white.)The Spaniels’ version was heard nearly two decades later on the soundtrack of “American Graffiti.” Among the Spaniels’ other Top 20 R&B hits, Mr. Carpenter said, were “Baby, It’s You,” “Peace of Mind” and “Let’s Make Up.”Mr. Hudson was born Thornton James Hudson on June 11, 1934, in Des Moines. The Spaniels first came together at Roosevelt High School in Gary, Ind., where Mr. Hudson grew up and began singing in church choirs. He was homeless for a time after he went solo and hit a slump in the 1960s, but he got back to work in the 1980s. He and fellow former Spaniels members took part in some oldies tours, holding down ordinary jobs on the side. He began receiving regular royalties for “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight” in the 1990s.He is survived by his wife, Delores, nine children and 16 grandchildren

Help wanted I am a student at the University of East Anglia and I am researching for a project on Scopitone Jukeboxes from the 1960s. I was wondering if you've had the jukeboxes at the show in the past and if you will this coming year? Do you know who I could get in contact with that has a Scopitone, Cinebox, or Colorama jukebox? My project is due in March and I was hoping to get some footage of the jukebox running or an interview with someone who owns one or has a knowledge about them. Thank you, Carla Reiter carlareiter@gmail.com

Ruth Brown - R'n'B Legend Dies at 78 Ruth Brown, the gutsy rhythm-and-blues singer whose career extended to acting and crusading for musicians’ rights, died on Friday in Las Vegas. She was 78 and lived in Las Vegas. The cause was complications following a heart attack and stroke she suffered after surgery, and Ms. Brown had been on life support since Oct. 29, said her friend, lawyer and executor, Howell Begle. “She was one of the original divas,” said the singer Bonnie Raitt, who worked with Ms. Brown and Mr. Begle to improve royalties for rhythm-and-blues performers. “I can’t really say that I’ve heard anyone that sounds like Ruth, before or after. She was a combination of sass and innocence, and she was extremely funky. She could really put it right on the beat, and the tone of her voice was just mighty. And she had a great heart". R.I.P..

Hemsby- What a fantastic weekend was had by all.Just one thing that took the edge off the fun was the asshole that decided it would be good fun to try to kill my buddy by letting her tyres down, ripping out the wires and pissing over her bike on the way back to their chalet. I assume this was because it was a 'N' reg Red Suzuki Bandit and not a 1947 Harley low rider!!!!!! If anybody knows who this was please let them know that she did survive their efforts!!!! Also let them know that she has been on our scene for the last 25 years and thought, as I did, that this crap had stopped happening back at Caister!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to think that this is not one of our crowd please PRINT this so that as many people can see it as possible and hopefully it will reach the right people eventually. Many thanks Cindy xx

Danny 'tequila!' Flores, dead at 77 HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Friday, Sep 22, 2006 - Danny Flores, who played the saxophone and shouted the word "tequila!" in the 1950s hit song "Tequila!," has died. He was 77. Flores, who lived in Westminster, Calif., died Tuesday at Huntington Beach Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Curran. He died of complications from pneumonia, the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper reported. The man sometimes called the "godfather of Latin rock" was born in Santa Paula, Calif., but grew up in Long Beach. By age five he was playing guitar in church and at 14 he was a member of a trio that performed Mexican music. In 1957, Flores was in a group that recorded some work with rockabilly singer Dave Burgess. One of the songs was based on a nameless riff Flores had written. He played the "dirty" saxophone part and repeatedly growled the single-word lyric: "Tequila!" The next year it appeared as the B-side of a single, credited to the Champs. Flores used the name Chuck Rio because he was under contract to a different record label. "Tequila!" went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart and won a Grammy in 1959 for best rhythm and blues performance. Flores continued to play it for the next 40 years. The song has been used in numerous commercials and TV shows. It became popular with a new generation after it was used in the 1985 movie "Pee Wee's Big Adventure." The Canadian Press, 2006

Juke Joint Norfolk - Date Change
We could urgently do with your help in advertising the fact that for reasons beyond our control we have cancelled Octobers band at The Juke Joint, Norfolk. The reason being we originally advertised that on the 21st October the B17's were playing at The Juke Joint Gorleston Norfolk. We cancelled this date due to the fact that we clashed with another club in Norfolk on the same date. They tried to change their date but were unable to do so. Our usual venue was booked on the 14th October but we managed to book another venue in Lowestoft. Unfortunately the B17's were unable to play that night so we booked Jelly Bean to play the 14th October at Lowestoft Football Club. For some reason having emailed the new date, email and band to the Complete UK Gig Guide asking for the 21st to be removed and the 14th to be added along with the new details. As you can see this hasn't been done. The 14th was only added recently although we have been trying to change the details for months. It has caused great confusion all round, as a lot of the Rock n Roll magazine use The Complete UK Gig Guide as a point of reference for their monthly listings of what is going on, on the rockin scene. They have therefor advertised the B17's at the Juke Joint for October playing on the 21st instead of Jelly Bean playing on the 14th at Lowestoft. To stop any further confusion and with deep regret we decided to cancel October completely. The decision to cancel completely was made on 25th September after receiving a phone call at 8.30 in the morning from a concerned promoter and friend who runs another Rock n Roll club in Norfolk asking did we know that our club was still advertised as having a band playing on October 21st. It seemed the only sensible solution to an ever growing problem. As you can see on the Complete UK Gig Guide it looks like we now have bands TWO bands advertised as playing in October, ONE on the 14th and ONE on the 21st. The bands at The Juke Joint Rock n Roll Club, The Shrublands Community Centre, Gorleston, Norfolk for November and December 2006 are as follows; November 11th Rockin the Joint December 9th Porkys Hot Rockin feat. Colin Evans (from the Doomsday Rockers) as per normal on these nights there will be full support from rockin DJ's "The Professor" and the big man himself "Rockin Shades" A big thank you to all the rockin people from Norfolk, Suffolk Cambridge, Essex and further afield who have supported us over the previous months this year. Sorry to mess you about.
Many thanks, Steph and Michele
